Four Letter Word Series
The four letter words are chosen for their power to stand alone; to captivate their audience with multiple meanings, not unlike a poem reduced to it’s very essence. Cox’s way of ‘constructing’ his images with unusual mediums such as pigmented wood putty over wood panel, ‘imbeds’ the words within the surface rather than applying them to the surface. The resultant image is an object more than a 2 dimensional image and, as a result, the viewer relates to the work on multiple levels, just as the words have multiple connotations.
Cox’s longstanding appreciation of the works of the great Haiku poets, Basho, Issa and Buson, finally led him to embark on this ongoing series.
